This Is What

We Saw

In 2026, as protests unfold across the United States, children are watching, participating, and documenting what they see. This collection of photos captured by children through disposable cameras showcases scenes of civic unrest alongside the quiet, familiar moments of childhood. The result is a collection that holds both realities at once: a nation in flux and the everyday world of being a child within it.

About

This project is loosely inspired by the Documerica project of the 1970s, which sought to document American life through a wide range of perspectives. In a similar spirit, this work centers on observation and record rather than authorship.

The curator of this project is not the photographer. These images were created by children using disposable cameras, with no directive beyond documenting what felt important to them. The role of the curator is limited to collecting and presenting these photographs.

This project prioritizes the perspectives of young people, allowing them to determine what is seen, remembered, and valued.
